Congratulations on your acceptance to University of Puget Sound!

Welcome to Tacoma
Your choice to attend UPS promises more than a first-rate education. You will be living and learning in the Tacoma-Pierce County area – home to vibrant downtowns offering diverse restaurants, nightlife, entertainment, festivals, retail, museums, and art. Additionally, the area boasts unprecedented natural beauty – from waterfronts on Puget Sound, views of the Olympic Mountains, and the breathtaking profile of Mt Rainier, which inspires locals to “live like the Mountain is out”.

Nourish Pierce County
But the best part of living in this area is the people. At Nourish Pierce County, the area’s largest network of food banks, it is our mission and privilege to work with those people – local businesses, organizations, foundations, student groups, social clubs, and generous individuals – to fulfill our mission of providing nutritious food and support services to people in need with compassion, dignity, and respect.

Our Mission

Through Nourish’s network of seven “brick and mortar” food banks and two mobile food banks which serve 18 additional distribution sites, we provide anyone in need with enough food for three meals a day for three days for every household member. No one is ever turned away.

In 2019 we served 66,000 individuals – that’s 7% of the Pierce County population. Our distribution sites include all five of the community and technical colleges in Pierce County. These partnerships are in response to the growing issue of student hunger, especially among community college students. Visit our website for a complete list of all of our distribution sites.

Volunteering with Nourish Piece County
Because of the COVID-19 health crisis and resulting unemployment, we have been serving record numbers of people since the spring of 2020. With only 17 full-time employees, Nourish depends on the services of 1,000 volunteers to help maintain the operations of our 25 distribution sites and warehouse facility. Many of our volunteers are retirement age, so they have been staying home to safeguard their health. While we have been incredibly fortunate to have the service of the Washington National Guard, we desperately need to welcome new volunteers to assist with packing and distributing boxes of food at our food banks.

If you are interested in helping to serve those in need in your new community, please be assured that the health and safety of our volunteers, clients, and staff is our first priority. We are operating a curb side/walk up service at all sites. This allows us to keep socially distant and to limit interactions.  To learn more about volunteering with Nourish, please visit the Volunteer page on our website.

Other ways you can help is by organizing a Food & Fund Drive. Everything you need to get started is available here. Because of COVID-19, all of our annual fundraisers were cancelled. But we have everything you need to use your creativity and talents to host your own virtual fundraiser to benefit Nourish. Finally, please follow us on social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Again, welcome to University of Puget Sound and our wonderful Pierce County community.
