Qualified Charitable Distributions from 401K or IRAs

Depending on your age, if you hold a 401k or other similar retirement account, you may have required minimum distributions.  In some cases, this may create certain tax problems for you that can be alleviated by making a qualified charitable contribution.  Rather than paying as much in taxes, you may be able to decide what cause you would like your money to support.  Gifts from retirement plans are an important way to do this.

Qualified charitable distributions (QCD) count toward your IRA or retirement account required minimum distribution.  Making a QCD can reduce your adjusted gross income, which can also have a positive impact on how much you pay for Medicare premiums, and even the calculation for taxability of Social Security income.

While individuals can give up to a total of $105,000 or couples can give up to $210,000 annually, even much smaller gifts make a huge difference in our ability to purchase food for distribution, fuel for our mobile food banks, and to keep the lights on.

Distributions must be made directly from your IRA custodian to Nourish, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, or your charity of choice.

Always talk with your financial advisor or estate attorney about what makes the most sense for you. If you have decided to make a qualified charitable distribution, your IRA custodian will need our business information: Nourish Pierce County 1702 S 72nd St., Suite E Tacoma, WA 98408, Tax Identification Number 91-1198391.

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)

Nourish Pierce County is grateful that several of our donors have established Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) and designate regular gifts to Nourish – these gifts help us support individuals and families who need food. You can create a DAF and recommend Nourish for a gift too!

So how does a DAF work? Once you establish a DAF at organizations like the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation or Fidelity Charitable, you may contribute cash (or securities) to the fund at any time. The contribution is irrevocable – the fund belongs to the DAF organization, but you get to make “grant” recommendations to the DAF holder. As long as your recommendation is to a 501 (c)(3) in good standing, your wishes are generally honored. Your gift receipt, for deduction purposes comes from the DAF holding organization.

Locally, the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation can be a good option; reach out to or call 253-383-5622.

Before making important financial decisions, please consult with your financial advisor, CPA, or tax attorney.
